Peru Hostels 2015

San Ignacio

Hostal La Posada

Address: Jr Cuzco

San Ignacio, Peru

I found the hostel a friendly and satisfactory place to stay on this rainy night. There is a restaurant and nice-sized room. A tough older lady is in charge and runs a tight ship. She'll get you what you need, including transportation. There is a breakfast as well. So, no complaints at all.

A Link to the some other travelers who went the same route

NOTE:

If you are here, you are either going to Ecuador, or just came from La Balsa, the border by taxi. The taxi driver knew where this place was. It's a small town. There is a little information on La Posada on facebook, but I could not find any specifics beyond that.

The taxi (tricycle) ride from there takes 10-15 minutes to the bus terminal where colectivos await to take you to Jaen, the next stop.

Quite Acceptable

The hostel is some distance from the bus terminal, but nearly in the center of town. Outstanding location.

NOTE:

Everything you may possibly need is very close around you. ATMs, just follow the street the hostel is on, going downhill, to the bank on the corner. Make a left and on your left-hand side of the street there is a secure room with several ATMs. Around the central plaza are super and smaller markets. Lots of cafes and restaurants around there as well. The place has a great kitchen open to all at any time. And most of all, a great couple (as about her chocolate) and others who work there and take care of you and to arrange whatever trips you may have in mind. Go to their website for more information. It was a place I would have gladly stayed longer jn, if I didn't have a schedule to follow.

The hostel is located not far from the main drag. Just minutes from shops, markets, restaurants. My room was spacious as was the bathroom. The breakfast is quite good. I did enjoy my brief stay there.

NOTE:

I arrived by bus from Lima, and if you're coming from Cuzco, you probably end up in the same terminal. After the long bus ride, I simply stormed out of there and started walking - out the door, Left, even though it was dark. What I did not know was that my host had actually driven there to pick me and some others up. He said he saw me walking away, but of course did not know who I was or where I was going. It was a good walk, not overly long and at a plaza where two streets branch off, I stayed on the left side. Not long after that I saw the street name of Fermin del Castillo and knew that I was close. Let me point out that the flight company that he is contracting with is, from my observation, and I had learned to fly, even once the same aircraft as they were flying, is a conscientous and safe operation. I had no problems flying with them. He may recommend to visit the canals and the graves, and will arrange that as well. It's a very nice trip that I would recommend. But while in Nazca, do not fail to visit the small but well equipped Inca museum. Not far, just past the main square and across from the fire station. I thought it was definitely worth it.

I arrived in Cuzco after the bus ride from hell, at a very nice Cruz del Sur terminal from where I took a taxi to the hostel. The location is quite good. You are just minutes from the great central plaza of Cuzco. A friendly family takes care of you, and will arrange for your trips, if needed. I have more on my Cuzco picture pages. Great breakfast, cheerfully served. The rooms are nice and spacious and I recommend reserving early. This hostel fills up quickly, and even in the off-season was quite busy. If you have a break in there for your trip to Macchu Pichu, discuss it with them over email. They will accommodate your break and store your luggage for the interim. I was quite comfortable there and felt very well taken care of.

NOTE:

I recommened going to the local market. It's quite colorful and fun. Two-three minutes away is also the Machu Picchu Museum, and up above Cuzco there is a string of four Inca ruins well worth a visit. You can take a colectivo up and then walk down.

The directions they give are all wrong. I reserved them through Hostelworld. When you get off the train, go through the souvenir shops and take the newer looking bridge across the river. First street that parallels the river is Av Pachacutec. You will be going downhill. The street has tons of restaurants and mini-marts. The hostel was very acceptable to me. The personnel friendly, especially the woman. There's a restaurant on the street level floor. The room was clean, large, had a working TV, and a nice bathroom. At 0500 they already had breakfast laid out. Sufficient. I made a couple of sandwiches and packed them.

NOTE:

The ticket booth for the following day's ride to Machu Picchu is just around the corner from the hostel, on the street that fronts the river. You'll recognize it easily. A lot of people in line. That's also where you line up the next morning. I took the bus, as do most people, because I did not spend an hour or so walking up the hill, I'd rather spend my time at my destination. Of course, it's your call. The whole operation runs like a clockwork. Maybe the best organized tourist site anywhere.

When I arrived with the Inca Express from Cuzco, they had sent a mini-bus to pick me up at the terminal by the lake. I loved this place. Great stay for me. Big room, clean and working bathroom, TV, and a tray with coffee, tea, and hot water on every floor. And the desk personnel was outstanding. I'd go back there anytime. You can see the breakfast buffet in the picture, and a girl would come around and ask you how you wanted your eggs. The location is close to the city center and there lots are of restaurants, shops, and mini-marts all along the way. Naturally, they arrange the tour to the Uros Islands as well as the tour to Sillistani, the pre-Inca and Inca necropolis.

NOTE:

Not far from the central square with the colorful little church (not the other one with the cathedral) turning to the right, just about anywhere, will take you to the large traditional market building, boutiques, all manner of fast and slow food places, and a very large and modern shopping center.

One more thing. If you plan to head from here to Bolivia, this is the time to get your visa. A Bolivian consulate is on the same street as the Suites Antonio. Go there, the girls will tell you exactly where it is, but you can also see the flag, just past the city square, and then go upstairs to meet the man. He will give you a list of things, including a yellow fever shot requirement. If you haven't got that. you can get it at the local hospital, not far from the Suites Antonio. Walk. It's not far and always interesting.
